The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) is one of the birthplaces of molecular biology and is an internationally renowned centre for fundamental biomedical research.

The LMB has a strong track record in training Postdoctoral Fellows who have gone on to become leading Scientists. They also have an excellent record of innovative basic research leading to applications in medicine. Scientists are drawn to the LMB from all over the world, thus creating a lively and international community for the exchange of ideas and technical innovation. Following their move to a new laboratory in 2013, they are able to provide state-of-the-art facilities in which innovative medical research, translation and collaboration can flourish.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scientist position in the Group of Dr Phil Holliger. The Group are using synthetic biology tools to develop new synthetic genetic polymers (called XNAs) that can be evolved into ligands and catalysts (see e.g. Science (2012) 336, 341 & Nature (2015) 518, 427).

Candidates should have a PhD degree in a biological subject or due to complete their doctoral studies within 6 months. You should have experience in recombinant DNA technology and should have a strong interest in in vitro evolution techniques and nucleic acid chemistry. Ideally, you will also have experience in next-generation sequencing, and oligonucleotide therapeutics.

The project is funded by BBSRC and MRC and will be aimed at the further development of XNA technology, especially for in vivo applications.

Successful applicants will be awarded a 2 year Career Development Fellowship/MRC Postdoctoral Training Scheme. The fellowship is a Training and Development position for a Postdoctoral Scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, or is moving into a new research discipline.
