[Closes 20 March 2016] PhD Studentship: Microdroplets and Synthetic Biology for Algal Biotechnology

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship that forms part of a multidisciplinary, multicentre project "Algal oils by design", which aims to establish microalgae as an industrial biotechnology platform for the production of high value lipids, such as omega-3 fatty acids.

The project will be based in the laboratory of Professor Chris Abell (Department of Chemistry) and will explore the use of microdroplets as a novel screening platform for identifying strains of algae with enhanced ability to synthesise the desired compounds. Microdroplets are increasingly being used to enable high-throughput analysis of single cells (for a review see Angew. Chemie Intl. Ed. 2010, 49, 2-25), using fluorescence detection or mass spectrometry (Anal. Chem. 2013, 85, 3812-3816). This project would suit candidates with a background in chemistry, physical sciences or nanotechnology, but biological scientists interested in technology are also welcome to apply.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class or upper second class honours degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in chemistry or other relevant discipline. We particularly welcome applications from students interested in working at the interface between biology and physical sciences. The studentship provides a maintenance grant (at the Research Council UK rate) and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Applicants must satisfy the eligibility and residence requirements of the UK Research Councils. Owing to funding restrictions imposed by the sponsor, non-EU citizens cannot be considered.

Deadline: 20 March 2016
