Engineering Biology in Cambridge

Run by Cambridge Applied Research, the hackathon will focus on some of the most challenging areas currently facing the genomics industry. The overnight event will be a weekend of inspirational thinking, problem solving and prototype development to create some impactful new solutions to real-world problems and a chance to win some great prizes! If you have a background in engineering, software development, biology, or just want to come and support the teams with your industry insights, sign up now! Attendance is free and all refreshments will be provided over the weekend.

OUR MOTIVATION

Genomics is the study of genes and their function. Genes are made up of DNA which comprises of 4 constituent molecules called G, A, T and C. These 4 molecules arranged in millions of different combinations form the code which contains all the information about our biology. Through sequencing the DNA, also known as the genome, we gain a full translation of our biological information into a single strand of genomic code. We have learnt huge amounts about ourselves from this information: from what eye colour we can expect in our children, to understanding risks of inheriting certain diseases.

Due to the vast amounts of data in one single genome, understanding which phrases of genomic code represent different diseases has historically been very difficult. Thanks to advances in machine learning and data science paired with increasing compute capability of modern hardware, our ability to understand the content of this genomic code has recently undergone another step change. However, translation of a person's sequenced genome into an increase in their wellbeing is by no means a solved problem

THE CHALLENGE

Genomic data is rich, complex and dense - Find a way to translate this data into a form where it can better improve wellbeing.

WHY > SUDO?

In the command line, sudo allows users to run programs with the security privileges of the superuser. We want to provide the environment for you to createinnovate and make impact with access to resources you wouldn't usually have access to.
