[Closes 12 Jan 2018] BBSRC Industry Placement Grants

The University of Cambridge has been awarded a Flexible Talent Mobility Account (FTMA). The FTMA is targeted at talented early-career (postdoctoral or equivalent)* researchers who have the potential to be the next generation of leaders within UK academic and industrial research; it is intended to support the exchange of personnel, perspectives and knowledge, skills and expertise between the academic and industrial sectors.

The internal call for Industry Placement Grants aligned with the scope of the FTMA is now open. Applications for up to £15,000 (Direct costs only, 100% fEC) are invited from BBSRC-remit researchers by Friday 12th January 2018. The result of the panel will be communicated shortly after this. All placements must be completed and the funding spent by 27th February 2019

FTMA grants may be used to support placements between academia and industry for postdoctoral (or equivalent level) researchers.

  • Postdoctoral researchers can apply for funding to conduct a placement with an industrial partner. We will also consider applications from recently-graduated Ph.D. students who are considering their career options.
  • PIs can apply to host an industrial researcher of postdoctoral-equivalent level in their research group.
  • The placement must have well-defined outcomes related to a research problem and/or development of the early career researcher involved.
  • A minimum of 3 months total time is recommended, but the structure can be tailored as long as clear justification is provided, e.g. one continual period, two split periods, or one day per week for several months.

Activities proposed must also align with one or more of the following objectives of the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy (LSIS):

  • Science – Continued support for the sciences base, maintaining strength and international competitiveness.
  • Growth – An environment that encourages companies to start and grow, building on strengths across the UK, including expansion of manufacturing in the sector.
  • Skills – Ensuring that the sector has access to a pool of talented people to support its aims through a strong skills strategy.

We welcome applications from non-UK citizens, as part of the funding for the scheme is provided by The Rutherford Fund, which aims to support the retention of talent in the UK. 

*The BBSRC definition is aligned to their David Phillips Fellowships: Applicants should hold a Ph.D., but not hold, or have held, an academic position at Lecturer level (or the equivalent in institutions other than universities).
