British American Tobacco (BAT) is seeking a Synthetic Biologist to play a key role in the New Sciences team. The role is within an R&D environment and requires the application of techniques related to synthetic biology to combine fundamental plant biology, metabolic engineering and basic computational biology tools to provide insights in multigene assembly, epigenomic interactions and metabolic networks. The position holder will interact closely with other members of the New Sciences team as well as across the wider R&D organization. This role will provide the opportunity to shape and lead new developments in plant biology and biotechnology to deliver new insights to support the research agenda and ensure business success.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop new synthetic biology tools for engineering traits or compounds of interest in various plant and cell systems
  • Genetic characterization of metabolic pathways
  • Create and/or optimize biosynthetic pathways for target molecules of interest
  • Provide leading edge expertise and support in the area of synthetic biology, molecular biology and bioengineering for the delivery of projects
  • Support the design, planning and delivery of work to meet deadlines
  • Communicate results and conclusions clearly
  • Proactively engage and interact confidently with a broad range of colleagues and stakeholders across the business

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • PhD with experience in Synthetic Biology, Molecular Biology, or Molecular Microbiology
  • Applied knowledge of multigene assembly systems and basic molecular biology tools for bioengineering of metabolic pathways
  • Applied knowledge in gene editing
  • Understanding of plant and microbial genomes and familiarity with microbial fermentation desirable
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Excellent team player
