Microscopy and instrument development are well established areas of collaboration between biologists and engineers. Traditionally biologists have provided the applications and engineers have provided the solutions. However there is growing interest in more interdisciplinary approaches. Engineers are inspired by a growing understanding of biology, and accessible tools can help biologists experiment with developing their own instrumentation.
Cambridge has a long history in developing new microscopy techniques. It is home to several advanced imaging facilities, including the Cambridge Advanced Imaging Centre and the Smart Microscopy Lab. In recent years we have also gained strong expertise in the area of low-cost DIY hardware through the Biomaker programme.
