Engineering Biology in Cambridge

Our researchers are developing and using molecular biology tools and synthetic biology approaches. This includes standardisation and modularisation of genetic building blocks.

Molecular biology and genetic tools, such as CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, DNA sequencing, and DNA synthesis have revolutionised the way we work. They are essential to modern biological research and the development of the bioeconomy. Synthetic biology takes an engineering approach to standardise and modularise these tools. This includes creating biological 'toolkits' with interchangeable parts. These tools are then used as ‘building blocks’ for engineering biological systems.

Cambridge research has greatly contributed to the development of such tools. It is also a leading voice in promoting the responsible use of synthetic and engineering biology tools.
