Engineering Biology in Cambridge

Join artist Nabil Ali for this fascinating two-day practical course exploring paint colours made from plants and organic materials. Nabil has demonstrated at SynBio events on biological colour before and has fantastic knowledge on plant pigments.

You will discover paint making processes using recipes developed from historical manuscripts and ancient sources, to form a wide range of colours and workable palettes. The course aims to help you to begin to establish your own natural paint systems using plants as a medium, and to develop your own creative work with them.

Day two of the course will allow you to discover and use colour compositions by applying paint layers, a variety of natural binders, organic fillers, preservatives and coloured egg glazes to create your own plant-based paintings. During the course you will also have rare access to Nabil’s extensively researched 'organic paint recipe archive' which gives valuable insight into the ingredients used, the measurements applied and notes on the practical processes for making paint from a vast range of plants.
