As part of our project: Applying Open Tools & Resources: towards Accelerating Engineering Biology Innovation in the Cambridge Cluster, the EngBio IRC welcomes you to apply for seed fund opportunities.
The Engineering Biology IRC Open Tech Collaborations Seed Fund offers up to £2500 to support the further development and impactful application of open technologies in two areas of research:
1. Biomedical sciences
2. Agriculture and sustainability
Eligibility
The lead applicant must be a current student or staff member of the University of Cambridge. Applications are welcome from all staff groups, including technicians and academic-related staff. The rest of the project team may be from any organisation(s). We highly encourage projects which involve cross-sectoral collaboration, involving, industry, civil society, etc.

What are we looking for?
Areas of focus of Seed Fund proposals include, but are not limited to:
- Trialling open technologies with new end users
- Collaborative development of open technologies to better meet end user needs
- Workshops and events to build further collaborations, downstream use and impact of open technologies
- Exchanges between academia and external organisations
What we will support
We can support direct costs only, this can include directly incurred staff time or contractors. Overheads, indirect costs and buyout of academic time or directly allocated staff costs are not supported.
Leveraging of other funding sources is encouraged but match funding is not essential.
Reporting
Successful projects will complete their expenditure and activities by 30 April 2024 and submit a one page report plus an expenditure spreadsheet by 31 May 2024, including links to any specific outputs generated e.g
The Engineering Biology Interdisciplinary Research Centre (EngBio IRC) is a centralised hub for Engineering Biology research. It brings together researchers, commercial partners and external collaborators. It supports researchers working across disciplines - at the intersections of biology, engineering, computer sciences, design and bioethics. The EngBio IRC was established in 2013. Since then, we have been keen on consolidating the position of the University of Cambridge as a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence in engineering biology.
