From hackathons to panel discussions, join an event to celebrate the achievements of women in synthetic biology and biotechnology.

International Women's Day HackHerTHOn

5th-7th March, 7pm-5pm

Open to: All

HackHerTH.0n focuses on women empowerment and gender equality in the workplace. It is designed for female professionals to build digital innovations which create extraordinary opportunities for women to showcase their skills. The hackaton will focus on three challenges: Open Source Eduction, Skills Exchange and Crowd Funding.

A free one day online conference jam-packed with workshops, inspirational speakers and groundbreaking ideas. This event aims to highlight the many inspirational female role models working within the UK, support the next generation of female innovators through workshops and expert advice sessions, and strengthen the UK as a world leader in innovation and gender inclusion.

Our students, researchers and academics at different stages of their careers will be taking part in this informal forum to share their own experiences as a women/men in STEM. We will take this opportunity to celebrate the achievements gained and also explore the challenges experienced to achieve gender equality, as well as discuss different positive actions we can take, as individuals and as an organisation, to help dispel myths and do away with potential bias (conscious or unconscious), inequality, and discrimination.

Women in Biotech - Transatlantic

Whilst VCs in life sciences continue to put management teams that are ‘proven’ or known to them in place rather than backing diverse ones, later investment rounds will demand a broader, more diverse set of thinking to which companies need to adapt in order to attract more mature capital. We’ll discuss these challenges with a panel representing a range of different investment stages – from both investor and leadership perspectives - taking in points of view from both sides of the Atlantic and encouraging an interactive discussion around best practice and how we can affect change, asking “how do we encourage investors to back female led/founded companies and diverse leadership teams from company inception?”.

Young Women In Bio Virtual Synthetic Biology Workshop

Cost: Free (optional $10 donation)
Open to: High school students (14-18)

This event will allow high school girls to explore the process of engineering novel biotechnologies. Synthetic biology is an exciting new field where organisms are engineered to address real-world problems. Its applications range from manufacturing to medicine to environmental issues. The goal of this virtual event is to gain an understanding of the field of synthetic biology and its uses, as well as to discuss the various ethical dilemmas that arise with genetic engineering.
