New technologies bring new benefits, but also new challenges and risks that must be addressed. In order to realise the full benefits and positive impacts of engineering biology we need to ensure ethical research conduct, equitable access and distribution of knowledge and resources, as well as excellent communication with policymakers and the public.

The University of Cambridge and the IRC have a strong interest in responsible research and a track record of advocating for equitable access to engineering biology knowledge and tools. Members of the IRC have also been involved in a range of activities to help understand the wider impact of engineering biology research on society, and to communicate and engage with stakeholders outside the research community.
