Engineering Biology in Cambridge

Our researchers are using engineering biology tools to understand plant biology and contribute to global food security.

Understanding plant biology and soil science is key to improving our agricultural systems. It is also essential to ensure future global food security. Engineering biology has the potential to streamline plant research, contribute to better agricultural systems and aid conservation efforts.

Cambridge has a strong background in applying engineering biology tools to Plant Science. From 2015-2022 the University of Cambridge co-hosted OpenPlant. OpenPlant was one of the UK's six national Synthetic Biology Research Centres. Its aim was to accelerate the development and open sharing of new tools and methods for plant synthetic biology.
