Engineering Biology in Cambridge

We explore risks, challenges, and benefits associated with engineering biology. We also seek understanding of bioethics and aim to provide feedback into policymaking.

As with all emerging technologies, the potential benefits of Engineering Biology should be carefully weighed with potential risks. Analysis of challenges and risks in the field should feed into policy and regulation alongside technology development to ensure that research and innovation are conducted in an ethical way. There is also a growing understanding that research and innovation should be conducted in a responsible way. This involves working in a fair and equitable way that benefits all stakeholders, including academia, industry, policymakers and the general public.

Since 2013, the Engineering Biology IRC has run initiatives such as the Biomaker programme, OpenPlant and a wide range of other open science and open hardware projects. Our researchers have a strong interest in both bioethics and responsible research and innovation.
